DESCRIPTION:How good will you be? 🙂 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShuffleboard (Shovillaborde) existed in England over 500 years ago. It is an exciting variant of Shov-Ha’Penny. Henry VIII was very fond of the game. The Royal Expenses for 1532 show a payment from the Privy Purse of nine pounds: \n\n\n\n”Paided to my lord Wylliam for that he wanne of the Kinges grace at shovillaborde” \n\n\n\nThe game was made illegal as early as 1542. Played in taverns it was feared that it might keep the proletariat from work! \n\n\n\nAttempts to ban the game were never completely effective. It was simply too popular. Even after Cromwell came to power\, when it was listed with other diversions as immoral\, the game continued to thrive. \n\n\n\nDuring the early part of the twentieth century ‘Sjoelbak’ a Dutch variation of the game emerged. A standard specification for the board and discs was introduced in 1966 in response to the growth of club and tournament play. \n\n\n\nToday shuffleboard (sjoelbak) is played across the UK.

DESCRIPTION:Becky Read will be visiting to give an Intro to Reiki & a short demonstration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Reiki Master – Becky Read \n\n\n\nHi there\, I’m Becky and I am an Usui Reiki Master in Lingfield\, Surrey.  \n\n\n\nI offer in-person 1-to-1 Reiki Treatment Sessions at Claridge House\, Lingfield or My Happiness Hub in Godstone Green or can travel to your home (10 mile radius of RH7) or can channel Distance Reiki for you. \n\n\n\nI came to Reiki from a place of curiosity and found that it really resonated with me and I wanted to explore it further.   \n\n\n\nMy first introduction to Reiki came before I had any plans of training:  I was mourning the death of my dearly beloved step-father and while supporting my widowed mother\, I naturally felt drawn to placing my hands on her chest asking for help to comfort her – when suddenly we could both feel heat pulsating through my hands.  “What is that?” my mother asked – and my answer at that point was “I don’t know….but it’s not coming from me – it’s coming from something greater than me; through me”. \n\n\n\nThis was the beginning of my exploration with the Universal Energy of Reiki and how it can nurture and support us for our highest good – whether that be for Physical\, Mental\, Emotional or Spiritual healing and guidance \n\n\n\nI feel committed to channeling this great resource that empowers and supports us – for anyone who feels it may benefit them. \n\n\n\nI am a member of The Reiki Association and adhere to The Reiki Association’s Code of Ethics. I’m also working as a Volunteer Reiki Therapist weekly at The Macmillan Centre\, Queen Vic Hospital\, East Grinstead.

But in my research I have been delighted to chance upon lesser known but interesting and pioneering women of strong character\, who ventured into traditionally masculine domains. This talk is about some of them\, living in or near London\, between roughly 1750 and 1950\, and involved in such fields as public health\, astronomy\, chemistry\, engineering and science fiction.

I spent 35 years of my life working in the world of British television\, stage and radio\, and even\, on odd occasions\, for foreign broadcasters. I provided the words for a long and glittering succession of star comedy performers\, and others who perhaps were not quite so glittering. \n\n\n\nThe stars I have written scrips for include Bob Monkhouse\, David Jason\, Rowan Atkinson\, Anne Robinson\, Russ Abbott\, The Two Ronnies\, Griff Rhys Jones\, Pamela Stephenson and\, not to be overlooked\, Basil Brush. \n\n\n\nI was one of the major contributors to Not the Nine O’clock News\, and latterly spent ten years in a two-man writing partnership with the late and great Clive James composing the scripts for multiple series of the Clive James Show.’ \n\n\n\n\nShould be a good one. Not to be missed!

DESCRIPTION:YWI member Sandra runs an exercise class in the village\, and she will give a short demonstration of some of the exercises and talk about the benefits of them. She hopes you will then take part in an exercise session to great music (mainly 60’s and 70’s).  The exercise class is called “Options”\, reflecting the fact that the exercises are versatile and can be done at different levels of intensity.   \n\n\n\nPlease wear trainers and comfortable clothes\, and bring a bottle of water. \n\n\n\nSandra will put us through our paces!

SUMMARY:Irish Dancing with the Gibbins School of Irish Dance
DESCRIPTION:We will be welcoming the Rachel & the Gibbins School of Irish Dance! \n\n\n\nRachel tells us ‘GSID was formed three years ago (although then had to close for lockdown) and we started with adult beginner and advanced classes. We’ve now just launched children’s classes too and are getting to an exciting time when some of our dancers are ready for competition and exams (we have four going to the World Championships in Belgium in April and two taking part of their teachers’ exams in May!)- but we have plenty of dancers who are there just for fun\, to keep fit and learn a new skill with a great bunch of ladies too 😊’ \n\n\n\n‘I started dancing at the age of 7 and gave up at 11 – but took it up again as a way to integrate when I moved to Germany when I was 19. I competed for the next ten years or so – including 7 world championships (best placing silver in solos and 7 world titles in teams)\, and won the European championships\, as well as 2 British Open titles\, 2 Irish Open titles and 3 German Open titles. I retired from competition when I was diagnosed with ME/CFS 12 years ago and struggled to maintain my fitness for competition – so I took my teacher’s\, adjudicator’s and examiner’s exams instead to remain involved with the dancing. I am affiliated with the World Irish Dance Association – an organisation with is incredibly supportive of adult dancers – and now hold the position of Head of the Examinations & Continuing Education Committee. Last year three of my dancers went to the World Championships in Killarney Ireland and placed 3rd\, 5th and 14th respectively so we’re looking forward to improving on the success of last year this year and starting to work on some team dances now we’re big enough for this years nationals.’ \n\n\n\nOn the evening\, we can expect some demonstrations in both softshoe and hardshoe from dancers who range from brand new beginners to championship dancers who’ll show you what they can do\, and then they’ll get everyone up to learn the first steps of their first beginner light dance – the beginner reel. (Rachel advise sporty clothing – eg leggings and T-shirts\, sports bras and trainers – and bring water!)Once we’ve given that a go\, we’ll get some ceili (team) dances going for a bit more of the social side of it. Sounds like great fun xxx
